I read with great interest your article concerning naturism in Spain (Sur in English August 13, 2010).
Spain is a very liberal country with respect to naturism indeed. Whereas other countries construct artificial barriers, Spain is breaking them down. However, it seems to me still insufficiently understood that naturism is a source of income. It may result in numbers of tourists whose needs are not taken into consideration in other countries for traditional or religious reasons. However, a diamond remains a diamond – even if it is buried under the rubble of many years. Costa Natura, the first Naturist Center in the South of Spain, is such a diamond.
Early 2011, the complex may look back at the 30th anniversary of its opening.
This means that it is now more than 30 years ago when the construction of the first naturist village in Spain was drafted and approved outside the then small town of Estepona. No doubt that Estepona has benefited from the existence of this naturist complex by both, guests and residents.
Unfortunately, the complex remained to be unfinished because of financial problems in the ninetieth. Nevertheless, it is – within the present borders – a beautiful place.
Unfortunately, the whole complex was neglected over the years because of serious mismanagement and because the owners of the first hours became old and partly even died. Buildings were considered cash cows – they became worn down with cracks and shingles of paint falling down. The gardens suffered from insufficient maintenance although nature helped to hide some of the ugliest spots.
However, in 2008 it was decided to start a general renovation programme which started in October 2009. In April 2010, a new President of the Community took over and started an upgrading programme of the whole complex. The first phase of this programme was finished in June 2010, but there will follow a second and a third phase in order to bring the whole complex back to its original glamour.
Costa Natura is like a Phoenix – it always rises from its ashes. Unfortunately, this rise started when the economy looked gloomy and the tourist sector suffered from the crisis
A good holiday resort with international fame is very important for a region with structural weakness. Andalusia suffers from unemployment because the construction sector collapsed and the tourism is slinking. However, naturist travel is a niche market which should not be under-evaluated. Many countries, where naturism is very popular (Scandinavia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria) cannot offer a stable and warm climate and, therefore, naturists used to come to Costa Natura. However, in parallel with the bad shape of the complex, many customers abandoned the destination. Prices remained too high and the competition was growing although there is no such complex around in the South – all places are good for campers, but those guests who want to spend their holidays in a real apartment have to go more North or to the Spanish Islands. Therefore, the administration of Costa Natura is doing its best to improve view, accommodation, service and publicity, in order to attract tourists and to contribute to an improvement in the tourism sector of Andalusia.
It is planned that a completely renewed Costa Natura will receive guests from January 2012 on. In the meantime, reconstruction works will be continued during the low season, and everything possible will be tried to achieve a full revival of the Naturist Paradise apartment complex by then!
