A very little known fact, which has recently come to our attention, is that if you live in Spain and have done so for more than 2 years, you MUST have a Spanish driving licence! My wife was stopped in July by a very officious and obnoxious Guardia Civil Officer and subsequently fined 200€ for having a non Spanish driving licence. She was informed that after 2 years you have to exchange your UK or other European driving licence for a Spanish one. We have appealed the fine even stating that she spends half her time in the UK, but they do not believe us and will not accept documentary proof. This has left a bad taste in our mouths and see it as another way of trying to push out hard working foreigners.
