Once more this summer, Alhaurín de la Torre will provide respite from the high temperatures in its cool gardens and jazz at El Portón estate. The Culture Council, headed by the Councillor Mario Pérez and with the artistic direction of the cultural Manager Toni Cordero, predicts a bold 2015 edition of “El Portón del Jazz”. There has been a substantial increase in advanced ticket sales and at the box office due to the great line-up of jazz figures.

Tickets for the Marcus Miller on 24 July have already sold out so everything points towards good attendances.

Robert Glasper Trío
Known worldwide for his ability to mix the sounds of jazz and hip-hop, the pianist Robert Glasper will open this year's edition. He says he is "a jazz musician who likes many things, and not only jazz”. He was born in 1978 in Houston (United States) and encouraged by his mother, professional singer of jazz and blues, began playing the piano at church, mixing influences from gospel, blues and jazz.

He studied at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and soon started working with jazz, RnB and hip-hop artists such as Mos Def, Q-Tip, Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z and Meshell Ndegeoncello.

In 2003, he published his first album 'Mood'. Later came 'Canvas', the first with the Blue Note label, and two years later 'In My Element', with reviews of Herbie Hancock and quotations from Duke Ellington. In 2009 arrived 'Double-Booked' with some influences of funk and spoken word.

Glasper has performed at major festivals, leading RCDC Experiment with Derrick Hodge (bass), Chris Dave (drums) and Casey Benjamin (Sax). Their next album with Blue Note, 'Black Radio', was the winner of two Grammy Awards. Recently, in the 'trío' format in which they will perform in Alhaurin de la Torre, Glasper has edited “Covered” also with Blue Note, with great critical success.

The bassist Vicente Archer will perform with him. Born and raised in Woodstock, New York, Vicente Archer is one of the best bass players of his generation. The atmosphere of his hometown and his own family, full of musicians, led him from a very early age to teach himself the guitar. At 16 years of age, he already took part in several ensembles in the area of the Hudson Valley and forged his own name in jazz. He began studying at the New England Conservatory and moved to Boston, where he changed instrument, beginning to play the acoustic bass. At the age of 20, while still studying at Boston, he was chosen by saxophonist and talent-hunter Donald Harrison for a tour, entering the prestigious Eric Reed Trio.

Then he went to New York and began working with artists like Terence Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Stanley Jordan, and many more. He currently works with the Blue Note label with Robert Glasper and Nicholas Payton among other renowned jazz interpreters. He is considered one of the most promising new voices of jazz.

The Trío will be completed by the drummer Damion Reid, from West Covina, California. Son of a bassist and a singer, at age three, he played in church and at twelve, world-renowned drummer Billy Higginsse, became his mentor. With him, Reid enjoyed years of training and creativity that forged his musical spirit, able to catch melodies both in an analytical and conceptual way. Soon he joined the collective of Billy Higginsse drums in the club 'The World Stage', learning from stars such as Billy Childs, George Bohanon and Oscar Brashear.

When he finished his studies, he moved to Boston and at the Conservatory of New England, coincided with big names such as Cecil McBee and Danilo Perez. He received the prestigious Alan Dawson scholarship and joined the Institute of Jazz at the University of the Southern California. He then went to study in New York where he began to perform with artists such as Robert Glasper, Ravi Coltrane and Steve Coleman, among many others.

Great voices of Jazz will also star: Richard Bona Mandekan Cubano (July 17th), Marcus Miller Afrodeezia Tour (July 24th) and Carmen Souza (July 31th) .

III Portón del Jazz Contest for emerging groups

Before the main concert, that will begin at 10:30pm, the public will be able to attend the III Portón del Jazz Contest from 9:30pm. The first night (July 10th) Daniel Torres Quintet will perform. This group, formed by five young Spanish musicians, develops personal and original music with roots in the bebop and into more modern sounds, creating an innovative and compact music in which the interaction and improvisation are the main elements.

The band was formed recently and this will be their debut, in which they will play mostly new songs composed by these five musicians. All its components have a consolidated experience in the world of the music and jazz in particular, having lived and studied in different cities, such as New York, Boston, London, Groningen, Amsterdam, Barcelona, etc...

The quintet is made up of Daniel Torres (saxophone); Markus Schneider (double bass and electric bass); Fernando Broz (flute); Juan Galiardo (piano) and Javier de el Barco (drums).

Dynamics of the evening

On July 10th, 17th, 24th and 31th at 9pm, the doors of El Portón estate will be open. Attendees can enjoy the large gardens, a green lung in the urban center, with outdoor sculptures made by the Art Collective of the provincial prison, Moraga.

The interior art gallery has two showrooms which will be open to the public until midnight. The biggest Hall, 'El Portón' hosts an amazing multidisciplinary exhibition under the slogan 'Intermezzo' by the prestigious José María Córdoba.

'Jazz series' is the motto of the pictures display by José Antonio García at the 'Bryan Hartley Robison' room.

There are more works of art to enjoy, like the mural of the civilizations by Lola García Chamizo in plaza Antonio Romero. There will be performances by participating groups in the III Portón del Jazz contest, beginning at 9:30pm. Each evening will be the turn of a band. On July 31th, prior to the awards ceremony, saxophonist Antonio Lizana will be acting as a guest artist.

From opening time, both the bar service, at affordable prices, and the free play-room for children between three and twelve years old, will be running until midnight. It makes it possible for parents to enjoy the evening while their children are taken care of by specialized monitors with games, stories, and crafts.
