Operation Wallacea is a very well known and respected non-profit organisation. It is funded by tuition fees and aims to assess and implement conservation management projects in many vulnerable and remote locations. With the help of students like me and my sister Maire, the scientists at each of these locations can acquire the relevant data and information needed in order to establish an appropriate management project.
Therefore Maire and I have decided that in the summer of 2012 we want to dedicate 4 weeks to volunteering for the scientists at the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. During this time we will be observing and monitoring many of the local species such as pink and grey river dolphins, manatees, river turtles and many more. Furthermore our work ensures that the Cocama Indians who live at the location are able to sustainably exploit their local resources to prevent depletion. Without the help of students like us, Operation Wallacea would not have sufficient resources and the habitats and species at these locations would remain unprotected.
As we are volunteers we must raise the money ourselves. We estimate total costs to be around £3000 each. We have begun selling raffle tickets that cost £1 or €1.50 each and the prizes include a new car, STA travel vouchers worth £2000 and a 6 month trip with Operation Wallacea. We are also looking for sponsorship and donations from our local home town of San Pedro.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!
